A Holtec designed Condenser in Operation

CFD Model- Steam Distribution During Bypass Operation

Benchmarking of a Steam Surface Condenser

    Water Cooled Condensers

The generating capacity of a power plant is critically dependent on the performance of the main steam surface condenser. Holtec steam surface condensers are designed and manufactured to offer the highest levels of reliability and efficiency that modern technology can offer.

Holtec offers steam surface condensers for coal fired, gas fired, cogeneration, waste to energy and nuclear power plants, ranging in output from 10 MW to 1000 MW.

The condenser can be designed as cylindrical, inverted “U”, rectangular, axial exhaust, down exhaust, single or multiple pressure, single or multiple shell, divided or non-divided waterbox and a variety of combinations thereof.

Each condenser is custom designed and manufactured to offer the best performance in the operating environment unique to the power plant.

    DESIGN

The thermal, hydraulic and mechanical aspects of the condenser are designed using state of the art proprietary computer programs. These programs offer component designs that facilitate efficient fabrication, conventional installation, and reliable performance. Special features are incorporated into the proprietary design programs to facilitate optimization studies.

Holtec’s ability to combine the thermal, hydraulic, mechanical, and economic imperatives in an optimized design is widely recognized in the industry.

Steam flow in a condenser is complicated in nature and difficult to predict with conventional analytical tools. These complex thermal, hydraulic and structural interactions are accurately predicted by Holtec engineers using state of the art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools, such as FLUENT and ANSYS.

    BENCHMARKING

Restrictions in shipping dimensions require condensers for larger power plants to be shipped in sections. To facilitate and minimize field erection efforts, the condenser components are fabricated in the largest possible sections. Prior to shipment, the components are benchmarked to ensure proper fit up and alignment.

Affecting these measures promotes the quick and easy installation of Holtec condensers at job sites all over the world.

    FABRICATION

Holtec condensers, feedwater heaters, and heat exchangers are fabricated by manufacturing licensees in North America and Asia.

All of the fabrication facilities have ASME Section VIII code stamps (“U” and “R”) and excellent reputations for quality fabrication and on-time delivery.
