Moisture Separator Reheaters

In a nuclear power plant the steam exiting the High Pressure steam turbine is entrained with moisture and the temperature is close to the saturation temperature. Admission of such steam into the Low Pressure steam turbine would reduce the cycle efficiency and cause damage to the turbine. Removal of moisture from the steam and subsequent heating in a Moisture Separator Heater (MSRs) improves the cycle efficiency and protects the LP steam turbine from damage.

Holtec MSRs fulfill the dual mission of protecting the LP turbine and enhancing the thermal efficiency of the power cycle by exploiting the proven innovations introduced in the MSR design in the late 20th century in nuclear power plants.

Holtec offers single stage as well as two stage MSRs. Among the design features that impute maximum reliability and operational ruggedness to the Holtec MSRs are:

  • A supremely efficient Chevron separator design that will not bend or bow resulting in significantly increased steam bypass
  • Flow stability and pulsations issues related to in-tube horizontal condensation of cycle steam
  • Elimination of flow induced vibration
  • Mechanical Design of pressure boundary guided by considerations to avoid fatigue and thermal cracking

The Holtec MSRs are fabricated at Holtec Manufacturing Division (HMD), a 400,000 sq ft facility, equipped with the state of the art fabrication tools & techniques and an approved quality assurance program for manufacturing custom design equipment for nuclear power plants. Currently virtually all Holtec engineered capital equipment destined for nuclear power plants worldwide are being manufactured at HMD.
